Combined Heat and Power Solutions
Keeping the Heat on and the Power Flowing

If you’re looking for an efficient, clean, and reliable solution for your power management needs, consider a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) system. Capable of running on renewable fuels like biogas and producing minimal waste, CHP systems are an excellent choice for businesses aiming for sustainable and economical power solutions. Canning Generator Solutions is a reliable provider of CHP Repairs and CHP Maintenance across a variety of sectors.
What is a CHP System?
A CHP system simultaneously generates electricity and captures usable heat in a single, efficient process. Using gas engine technology, this system avoids the typical waste of heat as a byproduct, making it a sustainable and cost-effective energy solution. Implementing a CHP system in your commercial property can significantly lower energy costs compared to individually purchasing electricity and gas for heating.
How Does a CHP System Work?
A CHP unit operates by using natural gas or renewable gas to power an internal combustion engine. This engine is connected to an alternator that produces electricity. The amount of electricity generated can vary massively depending on the installation, with units ranging in size from as small as 30kW to as large as 2.5MW.
In addition to generating electricity, a CHP system captures the significant heat produced during combustion in a hot water system, which is often lost in other systems. The heat from the exhaust, which can exceed 500°C, is harnessed using a secondary water system. This system employs heat exchangers to transfer the heat, making it usable for your services and infrastructure. The resulting hot water, typically heated to about 70-90°C, can be used directly, reducing or even eliminating the need for additional heating sources.
At Canning Generator Solutions, we recognise that each client’s energy requirements are unique, which is why we tailor our approach to fit your specific needs. Unlike many manufacturers who lock customers into using proprietary technology (resulting in higher maintenance costs and dependence on expensive, manufacturer-approved parts), we avoid this practice. In addition to installing CHP systems, we can upgrade your existing control panels with open-source controllers, cutting maintenance costs and freeing you from restrictive systems. Take control of your energy solutions.
Our advanced generator control panels empower clients with direct monitoring and control over their CHP systems. These panels deliver real-time information, enhancing your ability to manage your systems effectively. Additionally, all our CHP systems are designed as turnkey solutions, ensuring minimal disruption to business operations and seamless integration into broader business activities.
Combined Heat and Power Solutions
Why Use CHP?
There’s plenty of options for power generation out there, so what makes CHP stand out? Let’s run through the benefits so you can decide whether CHP is the right choice for your business.

Efficiency
CHP systems can operate at efficiency levels of 60-80%, compared to the typical efficiency range of 40-50% for conventional generation methods. This high efficiency reduces energy costs and lowers fuel consumption.

Sustainability
By maximising the energy obtained from fuel, CHP systems significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to separate electrical and thermal generation systems.

Energy Security
CHP systems provide on-site power generation, which reduces reliance on grid electricity and enhances energy security, especially important during outages or peak demand periods.

Cost Savings
The high efficiency of CHP systems translates directly into cost savings on energy bills due to reduced energy consumption. Additionally, the on-site production of power minimises transmission losses and infrastructure costs.
Reliability
CHP systems offer enhanced reliability and control over energy supply, making them ideal for facilities that require a constant, uninterrupted energy supply such as hospitals, data centres, and industrial plants.

CASE STUDY
Trusted by Leading Organisations
An FM company in the retail distribution industry faced a challenge at one of their distribution centres concerning their CHP system. The initial inspection revealed a potential issue: a corroded pipe resulting from stagnant water, prompting concerns about the system’s efficiency and potential risks.
Canning Generator Solutions implemented a meticulously planned strategy to address the issues identified at a distribution centre. The project initiation involved the strategic placement of a scissor lift, strategically positioned to provide optimal access to the affected components of the Combined Heat and Power (CHP) system. This was a critical step to ensure a thorough examination and effective resolution of the identified problems.
The inspection phase commenced with the removal of lagging surrounding the compromised pipe. This careful process revealed the extent of rust-related damage within the pipework. The team’s expertise and systematic approach were crucial in uncovering the hidden issues that could potentially impact the overall functionality of the CHP system.
Upon discovering the rust-related damage, Canning Generator Solutions recommended the comprehensive replacement of all non-stainless pipework. This decision was informed by the potential risks posed to nearby items and electrical equipment due to the corrosive nature of the rust. The team executed this replacement with meticulous care, ensuring all rust removal and installing stainless steel equivalents for every essential component.
This strategic intervention rectified the existing issues and proactively safeguarded the longevity and efficiency of the CHP system. By replacing the non-stainless pipework with durable stainless steel equivalents, Canning Generator Solutions ensured that the distribution facility would benefit from a reliable and robust energy infrastructure, minimising the risk of future complications and optimising the overall performance of the CHP system.
