The generator at a prestigious Cardiff hospital faced operational challenges, including coolant leaks and contamination issues. The managing FM company enlisted Canning Generator Solutions to address these concerns and ensure the generator’s optimal performance.

During the initial project phase, our team opened permits and conducted a thorough Dynamic Risk Assessment. A meeting with the site contact allowed for a review of the generator’s fault history, and a comprehensive inspection of the generator was carried out to identify potential issues.

A specific focus was given to the inspection of the coolant system, revealing a bund filled with a mixture of coolant and rainwater. Evaluation of coolant pipes and hose joints showed no leaks, but a leak from the temperature probe on the engine block was identified. The repair and maintenance phase involved replacing the O-ring on the temperature probe, fitting a new 6mm bolt, and refilling the coolant system with clean water for a test run. Leaks observed during heavy rainfall were addressed during an off-load run, and recommendations were made for a fresh coolant refill and an oil change due to the presence of black, low-viscosity oil.

The clean-up process included draining and cleaning the bund and base frame, which were filled with coolant, rainwater, and oil residue. Further recommendations involved proposing a dry day test run to check for additional leaks and suggesting load bank testing for on-load running. For project closure, the team left the controller isolated due to the hire set connection and removed all waste generated from the site. The work area was left in a clean condition, and the project was officially concluded with the team signing out of the site and closing all permits.
