The Mission: Resolve challenges with the diesel generations at Nuffield Hospital, Cardiff Vale, including leaks and contamination issues.
Hospitals like Nuffield, Cardiff Vale rely heavily on backup generators to keep their medical equipment functioning properly, even during power outages. A reliable generator system in place means patients receive uninterrupted care, which is especially important as downtime could have serious consequences. When CBRE noticed coolant leaks and contamination in the generator at Nuffield Hospital, Cardiff Vale, they needed an urgent solution to prevent further operational risks.

The Solution
Canning Generator Solutions was brought in by CBRE to address these critical issues and restore the generator’s performance, ensuring the hospital’s standby power system would continue to function smoothly and reliably.
Initial Inspection
After opening permits, we started by conducting a Dynamic Risk Assessment. Meeting with the site contact allowed us to review the generator’s fault history, alongside a thorough inspection to identify potential issues. This revealed a bund filled with a mixture of coolant and rainwater, indicating potential system contamination. Evaluating the coolant pipes and hose joints showed no leaks, but we identified a leak from the temperature probe on the engine block.
“By thoroughly inspecting, maintaining, and providing recommendations, we made sure the system was performing at its peak while addressing potential future issues.”
Repairs and Maintenance
Our team immediately addressed the issue by replacing the O-ring on the temperature probe, installing a new 6mm bolt, and refilling the coolant system for a test run. Further inspections during heavy rainfall highlighted additional leak concerns, which we addressed by recommending a fresh coolant refill and an oil change, as the current oil was black and had low viscosity.
Clean-Up
After the repair process was completed, the clean-up process could begin. The bund and base frame, filled with coolant, rainwater, and oil residue, were thoroughly drained and cleaned. We proposed conducting a test run on a dry day to check for additional leaks and recommended load bank testing for on-load running. The site was left in immaculate condition, with all waste removed, and the project was officially signed off.
Conclusion
Canning Generator Solutions successfully repaired and improved the reliability of the generator system at Nuffield Hospital, Cardiff Vale. By thoroughly inspecting, maintaining, and providing recommendations, we made sure the system was performing at its peak while addressing potential future issues. Due to our intervention, the client’s confidence in their generator was restored, showcasing our commitment to excellence and problem solving.
