The Mission: Inspect and resolve corrosion in the CHP system at ASDA Distribution Centre, Skelmersdale, by replacing non-stainless pipework with durable stainless steel.
When a corroded pipe in the Combined Heat and Power (CHP) system at a Skelmersdale ASDA Distribution Centre was discovered, City FM knew they had a problem on their hands. If left unchecked, it would pose efficiency risks and potentially damage the surrounding equipment.

The Solution
Canning Generator Solutions was called in to evaluate and resolve the identified issues, protecting critical equipment and ensuring the long-term reliability of ASDA’s CHP system.
Preparation
To address the problems at ASDA Distribution Centre, Skelmersdale, our team crafted a meticulous strategy. The project began by strategically placing a scissor lift so that we could access the affected CHP components. This allowed us to thoroughly examine and resolve the problems we identified.

“We were careful and meticulous, removing rust and installing stainless steel equivalents for every essential component.”
Inspection
We started the inspection phase by removing the lagging surrounding the compromised pipe. This careful process revealed the extent of rust-related damage within the pipework, likely due to water stagnation. The inspection confirmed that replacing non-stainless steel components with durable stainless steel equivalents was the best course of action.
Pipe Replacement
Based on our findings, we proceeded to replace all non-stainless pipework with high-quality stainless steel, which is resistant to corrosion, to enhance the system’s longevity. We did this due to the potential risks posed by nearby items and electrical equipment due to the corrosive nature of the rust. We were careful and meticulous, removing rust and installing stainless steel equivalents for every essential component.
Conclusion
The project outcome was a major boost to the CHP system’s resilience and functionality at the Skelmersdale ASDA Distribution Centre. Addressing the leak’s root cause and upgrading vulnerable parts helped secure the system’s efficiency and reliability long-term.
As a result, ASDA can continue their operations in the Skelmersdale region without disruptions that could impact their supply chain operations. Canning is proud to support ASDA’s continuous operations, helping them reliably meet customer demand.
