The Mission: Sort out cooling system issues in a diesel generator at a busy supermarket in Morley.
For a large retail site with non-stop operations, a reliable generator is a critical safeguard for continuous operations. When the cooling system in the site’s diesel generator began to experience performance issues, City FM brought in Canning to restore full operational reliability.
From low coolant levels to heater faults and hose issues, there were several issues requiring prompt resolution. So, our team was deployed to carry out the necessary works.

The Solution
City FM flagged problems with the diesel generator’s cooling system – an essential part of keeping the engine running smoothly. The heater and hose needed attention, coolant levels weren’t right, and the system was not performing to specification. Without intervention, there was a real risk of the generator failing when needed most – a risk no site can accommodate.
Running Checks
As always, safety came first. We kicked off with permit sign-in and a full Dynamic Risk Assessment to make sure the works could proceed safely and efficiently. With the site prepped, our engineers isolated the engine and ran a series of checks on the heater – this step’s crucial to make sure any faults are caught before further intervention.
Once the initial tests were done, we drained out the old coolant and introduced a specialist flushing solution to clear the system. Over time, coolant can degrade and accumulate deposits; flushing restores flow and improves engine efficiency. We followed this up with a heater restoration and ran the generator in manual mode to confirm that everything was performing as expected.
“Without intervention, there was a real risk of the generator failing when needed most - a risk no site can accommodate.”
Coolant Strength
With the flushing complete, we filled the system with fresh coolant and carried out a coolant strength test. Measuring protection down to -40°C, this step is a must for resilience – especially at sites where exposure to low temperatures or long idle times can pose a risk. Getting this right means fewer issues down the line and longer life from the whole system.
Once everything had been tested and adjusted, we switched the panel and controller back to auto mode. That means the generator is ready to fire up automatically during a power outage, with no need for manual input – in accordance with operational requirements.
A Clean Finish
After the site works was done, we wrapped up with a full site clean. All waste from the job was removed and disposed of properly, and the area was restored to a clean, safe, and orderly condition. With the job complete, we closed off all permits and signed out, knowing the generator was ready to do its job.
Conclusion
This was a a clear demonstration of how proactive maintenance sustains critical system performance. By flushing the system, restoring heater performance, and checking coolant strength, Canning gave City FM peace of mind that their generator would deliver when required.
This project reflects Canning’s commitment to reliability, responsiveness, and thorough service delivery.
