Marks & Spencer (M&S) is known nationwide for its quality, and customers expect nothing less from their Simply Food stores. So, when M&S Rickmansworth Simply Food faced operational risks, including an AMBER severity rating, Canning was called upon to tackle those issues and restore safety and reliability to the generator systems.
The Solution
Thanks to our extensive experience with diesel generators, City FM entrusted us to address the oil cooler issues and weather-damaged canopy, which had caused rainwater to leak into the facility.
Initial Inspection
We arrived on-site and began with a Dynamic Risk Assessment to identify key issues, including the faulty oil cooler and water ingress caused by the weather-damaged canopy, which were marked AMBER for quick resolution. To avoid any disruptions to the store’s operations, we coordinated with the store manager to schedule an out-of-hours load test on the generator to verify its auto changeover functionality.

Oil Cooler Overhaul
The core of the project was a complete overhaul of the oil cooler. We reconnected coolant hoses, replaced fan guards, and flushed the cooling system before refilling it with fresh coolant. To tackle contamination concerns, we performed an off-load oil flush and replenished the system with new engine oil. After a 30-minute engine test run, we confirmed that the refit was successful, and everything was working as intended – with operational integrity greatly improved. Then, the generator system was reset to automatic mode, marking the completion of this crucial phase.
Cleanup
Once the refit was complete, our team cleared all waste from the site and conducted a final cleanup, leaving the facility safe and operational. This contributed to the overall safety and reliability of the site, alongside leaving the client with as little hassle as possible.
