The Mission: Solve the operational concerns with their diesel generator and restore the supermarket to full efficiency.
When you’re running a busy distribution hub like this leading supermarket in Darlaston, reliable backup power is essential. With a constant flow of goods in and out, any disruption can significantly affect operations, staff, and customers. So when concerns cropped up with the site’s diesel generator, City FM called in Canning to resolve the issue. They needed a team capable of maintaining smooth operations with no disruption or downtime.

The Solution
The generator at Darlaston was exhibiting several concerning signs. The AV mounts weren’t holding steady, the engine oil needed attention, and the radiator matrices were well overdue a clean. If left unresolved, these issues risked causing major disruption at a high-volume distribution site. It required immediate attention, delivered efficiently and without downtime.
Getting Set Up
Our engineers arrived on-site, got signed in, opened the permits, and carried out a full Dynamic Risk Assessment to ensure all works could proceed safely.
Full System Service
The service began with an off-load run to bring the engine to temperature and prepare the oil system for draining. Once it was up to temperature, we drained the old oil, swapped out the filters, and refilled it with fresh, clean oil – removing accumulated rainwater and contaminants in the process.
Next up was the AV mount. One mount had failed, which required the set to be lifted and the mount replaced to ensure the generator was correctly aligned and secure. Then we moved on to the radiator guards and matrices, thoroughly cleaning and refitting them to optimise cooling system performance.
Once everything was back in place, we ran another off-load test to confirm the generator was restored to reliable operation.

Finishing Up
With the work done, we returned the controller to auto, tidied up the site, got rid of all the waste, and closed off the permits. The works were completed with the generator ready for deployment when required.
Conclusion
Through Canning’s structured and effective approach, the Darlaston supermarket’s generator was fully restored to reliable operation. Rather than applying temporary fixes, we addressed the immediate issues and ensured the system’s long-term reliability.
This project reflects Canning’s core commitment: keeping power on, supporting business continuity, and providing dependable service whenever required.
