The Mission: Upgrade their generator and energy systems across 30 stores, ensuring seamless integration into the National Grid’s Demand Side Response (DSR) program.
As one of the UK’s most iconic brands, Marks & Spencer (M&S) is synonymous with quality. When the opportunity arose for M&S to take a smarter approach to energy usage by joining the National Grid’s Demand Side Response (DSR) program, they knew it was time to make significant upgrades to their generator and energy systems. To achieve this, they needed a partner capable of delivering custom solutions across multiple locations while maintaining the high standards M&S is known for. That’s where Canning Generator Solutions came in.

The Solution
We were commissioned by principal contractors, Balfour Beatty, to deliver a comprehensive upgrade to M&S’s energy systems as part of the DSR initiative. Our team was tasked not only with the project execution but also with the full design of control logic for each store involved in the project.
Nationwide Site Assessments
Firstly, our team visited over 50 M&S stores across the UK to identify the 30 most suitable locations for the upgrade. Each store presented its own set of challenges, with different control systems, logistical setups, and power needs. We worked closely with store managers and M&S’s facilities teams to ensure minimal disruption to daily operations. Our in-depth analysis allowed us to tailor each upgrade to the specific needs of each location.

“By the end of the project, 30 stores were upgraded and transformed into energy-saving, revenue-generating assets...”
Upgrades and Installations
After designating the suitable stores, we got to work on the upgrades. This included installing new generator and mains control panels to integrate with existing switchgear, as well as adding G59 protection relays, motorised protection devices, neutral-earthing contactors, exhaust flue extensions, and larger capacity bulk fuel tanks. Despite the individual challenges posed by each site, we made sure every upgrade was completed to the highest standards M&S expects.
Phased Roll-Out
Given the scale of the project, we divided the work into two clear phases, which allowed us to complete the necessary upgrades without overwhelming resources or disrupting the daily operations at M&S. By phasing the project, we made sure each store was properly commissioned and integrated into the National Grid’s DSR program without a hitch. Throughout this process, we maintained close collaboration with Balfour Beatty and M&S to ensure everything ran smoothly and on time. By the end of the project, 30 stores were upgraded and transformed into energy-saving, revenue-generating assets – fully aligned with M&S’s commitment to smarter energy usage and a more sustainable future.
Conclusion
Canning Generator Solutions delivered a successful, nationwide DSR upgrade for M&S, providing customised solutions for each store while enhancing energy efficiency and revenue generation. Our team’s expertise in designing and implementing these complex systems has ensured that M&S now has 30 stores contributing to energy savings, with reliable generator and control systems in place.
