The Mission: Fix a fuel leak in a diesel generator and carry out a full overhaul of the fuel pump to get the system safe, sound, and running reliably again.

In the world of retail, keeping power systems in a good operable state is vital, especially when they’re relied on as backup for essential services. So when City FM flagged a fuel leak in one of their diesel generators, they knew it wasn’t something to wait around on. With safety on the line and the potential for a full-blown failure, they gave us a call.

Canning were nominated to carry out the repairs, splitting the job into two key phases: one to fix the immediate issue, and another to carry out a full fuel pump overhaul.

The Solution

The job started at a leading City FM supermarket in Donnington, where a fuel leak had occurred inside the diesel generator system. While the leak itself was already a worry, closer inspection suggested the fuel pump might be in a worse condition than first expected.

Our challenge was to stop the leak, investigate the full extent of the damage, and carry out whatever repairs were needed to keep the generator system safe, compliant, and working as it should.

Diagnosing the Fault

We got started by carrying out a full site assessment, making sure everything was safe to commence the works. Then we stripped back the engine to gain access to the fuel pump – a delicate job that needed a careful hand to avoid disturbing other components. Once the fuel pump was removed, we sent it off for full testing to see what we were really dealing with.

The results confirmed what we suspected: the damage was more serious than just a leaky seal. The fuel pump was showing significant wear, and there was no sense doing a half-measured job. So, we advised a full overhaul – the best way to guarantee long-term reliability and get the system back to full working order.

“After the rebuild, we ran the generator off-load for 15 minutes, ensuring no leaks were present. Everything ran smooth - no leaks, no issues, no alarms.”

Overhaul & Refit

Once the fuel pump came back from its overhaul, we returned to site to carry out the refit. That meant reinstalling the unit and reconnecting all associated pipework and fittings, making sure every join was sealed properly and pressure-tight.

After the rebuild, we ran the generator off-load for 15 minutes, ensuring no leaks were present. Everything ran smooth – no leaks, no issues, no alarms. We returned the controller to its auto position, confirming the system was ready for automatic operation whenever it’s needed.

Clean-Up

As with every job, we finished by clearing the site, removing all waste and materials, and giving the area a proper clean. We closed all permits and left the place cleaner than it was when we commenced the works, now with a fully functional, future-proofed diesel generator in its place.

Conclusion

Thanks to quick action and firm planning, Canning delivered a full fix for a critical fuel leak and got the diesel generator at City FM’s Donnington site back to full strength.

With a fresh fuel pump, thorough testing, and peace of mind restored, the client now has a reliable backup system in place, keeping their operations running smoothly, whatever comes their way. It’s what we do best.
